Viagra, a popular pill for impotence, is expected to be available this week, but its maker is uncertain how much it can cost. A cheaper version, called the Viagra Connect, will cost around $5, but many consumers aren’t eager to try the drug.
“It’s going to be expensive,” said Adam Weintraub, a urologist at Boston University who studies erectile dysfunction. “The generic version will be way cheaper.”
But the more expensive version, called the Viagra Connect, is a much more convenient and discreet way to get Viagra than the popular drug’s name has suggested.
It’s also easier to buy than the name suggests, he added. The drug is sold in 20-milligram doses and will be available in 50 mg tablets for $5. It costs about $15 a dose, but a doctor who treats erectile dysfunction can prescribe the equivalent of 10 Viagra Connect for as little as $2.
Viagra is the longest-running erectile dysfunction drug, but other drugs have taken the place of the name. In a study of men with mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction, a team of scientists at Harvard and San Diego found that men who took the name had higher rates of impotence than did those who didn’t. Those rates were also higher among those who took the name’s generic version.
A second study in 2002 found that the name was associated with a 5.1 percent increase in the risk of dying from heart disease.
We are having a bad time with this name, though. Viagra, like many medications, has had a negative impact on the quality of life of millions of men. It can lead to erectile dysfunction in some, but that’s just the first of the many problems it has caused.
“I think a lot of the problems with Viagra are a result of the way it works,” said Dr. Tom Brophy, a urologist at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital. “You’re not going to see much difference in your sex life when you take it, but when you take it for the first time, you’re going to see a lot of changes.”
A second problem is that Viagra doesn’t work the same way for all of the problems that it does work for, such as the risk of urinary problems and sexual problems.
A third problem is that it’s a very hard pill to swallow. The name’s not the first-choice drug for erectile dysfunction, but many men prefer to use something with fewer side effects.
Many of the problems Viagra has caused are mostly temporary, Brophy said. “If you take it for a while and you’re looking to have sex, the first thing you’ll probably want to do is talk to your doctor,” he said.
Viagra has also been linked to an increased risk of dementia, a medical condition that affects people with dementia. The drug can also cause an increase in blood pressure, a risk that is much higher for people who have diabetes.
